The Secret Ingredient to Empowering Singers

Hi Lovely Singers,

In a previous life, I worked with people with Learning Disabilities and specialised in the Person Centred Approach. This is a method which allows a client, or student to lead their own learning process, with the teacher taking a supportive and collaborative approach.

I found this method to be so empowering that I have centred my Vocal Coaching style around it too. It can definitely be a bit messier than if I were to take a more traditional approach, but music is messy and rarely black and white (no piano jokes, thanks!) so it works :) It allows for much more creative singing lessons and also helps me to really connect with each singer I work with. There really aren’t any downsides, in my opinion.

I know that the Person Centred Approach is working in my Vocal Coaching, when clients who have moved away, come back and tell me that their new coach doesn't 'get' them the way that I do, and that as a result their progress has slowed.

Obviously, I want my Vocal Coaching clients to flourish regardless of whether they're working with me or not. However it is my personal mission to 'get' every singer that I work with. When someone feels listened to and understood they are more able to be creative, take risks and make valuable mistakes. This in turn helps me to understand what they really need from me, and the direction that they want their voice to go in.

By following the Person Centred Approach, I am able to make the small, intuitive adjustments to our training sessions, that have hugely powerful results.

I also get to form strong connections with lots of amazing and interesting people :)

Have I mentioned how much I love what I do??
